Article: Maldives vs Mauritius vs Dubai vs Seychelles: Which Beach Destination is Best for You?

When it comes to planning a beach holiday, the question I’m most often asked is: Which destination is best for me?

I’ve been fortunate enough to travel extensively through the Maldives, Mauritius, Dubai and the Seychelles, and I can confidently say that each destination offers something truly unique.

Over the years, I’ve also arranged countless tailor-made trips for clients to these idyllic locations, giving me a clear insight into which resorts consistently tick the right boxes, whether that’s for romance, family adventures, luxury escapes or once-in-a-lifetime celebrations

From the overwater villas and turquoise lagoons of the Maldives, to the lush landscapes and cultural richness of Mauritius, the glamour, luxury resorts and modern city-meets-beach vibe of Dubai, or the unspoilt beauty and laid-back charm of the Seychelles, every location promises an experience that is both special and utterly memorable.

The challenge isn’t whether to visit, but rather which one is the perfect match for your style of holiday.

The Seychelles

Nature’s Masterpiece

The Seychelles is where untouched beauty reigns supreme. Imagine over 115 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, each offering its own slice of paradise. This is the destination for those who seek serenity wrapped in nature’s grandeur. With iconic huge granite boulders adorning stunning beaches and encounters with giant Aldabra tortoises, it’s a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and adventurers.

Beaches: straight out of a postcard, framed by iconic granite boulders and waters that shimmer in every shade of green and blue.

Highlights: The joy of island-hopping between untouched, wild and wildly beautiful spots, each with its own distinct personality.

Not for Everyone: With no direct flights currently from the UK, the extra effort can deter some.

The Maldives

Romance Redefined

For sheer romance and beachside luxury, the Maldives is peerless. The iconic overwater villas set against a backdrop of turquoise lagoons and super-soft white sand create a dreamscape that has become synonymous with honeymoons and milestone celebrations.

The Maldives is perfect for those who adore the ocean, whether you’re snorkelling among vivid coral gardens, diving with manta rays, or simply soaking in the views from your private infinity pool. Life here slows down, allowing couples to reconnect in a setting that feels like it’s been tailor-made for love.

The Maldives at a glance

Beaches: Unmistakable sugar-white sands and crystal-clear lagoons, with underwater visibility that sets the global benchmark.

Highlights: Barefoot luxury, “no news, no shoes” living, and some of the world’s most indulgent beachfront accommodations.

Not for Everyone: Lacking in nightlife or land-based exploration.

Mauritius

A Cultural Mosaic

Known as a melting pot of cultures, Mauritius combines a little bit of everything, sandy beaches, lush rainforests, and vibrant cities. Unlike its counterparts, this island’s cultural diversity is as much a highlight as its natural beauty. Colourful markets, Indian temples, French influences, and African rhythms all harmonise here, creating a rich tapestry of experiences.

Families and groups will love how easy it is to explore, from snorkelling off the coast to trekking in Black River Gorges National Park. With a range of high-quality resorts, gourmet dining options, and activities both on land and sea, Mauritius delivers a holiday that’s as active or laid-back as you desire.

Mauritius at a glance

Beaches: Golden, rustic stretches fringed with palm trees — more characterful than polished, but still undeniably beautiful.

Highlights: Wholesome charm, cultural depth, and a mix of adventure and relaxation that feels authentic and inclusive.

Not for Everyone: Snorkellers and divers may find the visibility underwhelming compared to other Indian Ocean rivals.

Dubai

Glamour Meets the Coast

Though not a tropical island, Dubai earns its place on this list for its outstanding blend of city and beach. Just a seven-hour flight from the UK, it’s the go-to destination for those seeking sun, glamour, and excitement without venturing too far from the UK.

With golden beaches lining the Arabian Gulf, world-class shopping malls, and luxury hotels that are destinations in themselves, Dubai caters to those who enjoy the finer things in life. Add to that thrilling attractions such as desert safaris, theme parks, and a nightlife scene that rivals the best in the world, and you’ve got a recipe for an unforgettable holiday.

Dubai at a glance

Beaches: Mostly manmade, yes, but with superior service, immaculate sands and facilities that more than make up for the lack of natural drama.

Highlights: A heady mix of glitz, glamour and modern marvels, where beach relaxation meets world-class shopping and entertainment.

Not for Everyone: Not everyone’s cup of tea, some find it a little too polished, modern and, dare I say, superficial.

The Final Verdict: Where to Go and Why

Each of these destinations shines in its own way, making it nearly impossible to pick a definitive “best.” But if I had to match each destination with its ideal traveller and occasion, here’s how I’d sum it up, in no particular order:

  1. Seychelles excels as a once-in-a-lifetime destination, which is perfect for island hopping. It is especially attractive for wildlife lovers, hikers, and those seeking to immerse themselves in breathtaking natural scenery. A great choice for couples, families, and solo adventurers alike.

  2. Maldives wins for honeymooners or couples craving seclusion, romance, and unparalleled marine beauty. Perfect for beach bums and water enthusiasts.

  3. Mauritius is the most accessible destination in the Indian Ocean and easiest to navigate once there, making it ideal for families and groups. It’s perfect for travellers who want a mix of land activities, great cuisine, and an effortless island experience.

  4. Dubai is best for those wanting a shorter flight, glamorous experiences, and a mix of beach and city life. Ideal for sun-worshipping couples who love luxury, nightlife, and shopping, and families looking for a beach holiday with lots to do and see.

If truth be told, they all shine in their own way; each destination delivers its own distinct magic, their strengths lie in their individuality. From the Maldives’ serene overwater luxury to the Seychelles’ wild, untouched beauty, Mauritius’ cultural charm, and Dubai’s glamorous urban coastline, they shine in incomparable ways.

I tend to match each one to the traveller and occasion it suits best, and celebrate the fact that there is a perfect beach escape for every style of wanderlust.

Happy Travelling, Amanda
