Article: Common Misconceptions About the Maldives
Facts that set the record straight, we tackle the most common myths surrounding the Maldives.
Few places are as instantly recognisable as the Maldives, yet many of the ideas people hold about the islands are based more on assumption than fact. Over the years, certain misconceptions have been repeated so often they’ve almost become accepted truths. But beyond the clichés of overwater villas and seclusion, the Maldives offers a wealth of surprises that reveal a much more colourful reality.
1. Only the Rich and Famous Can Afford to Go to the Maldives - Not True
While the Maldives is synonymous with luxury, you don’t need to have a celebrity-sized bank account to enjoy it. Yes, cocktails can be pricey (imported booze doesn’t come cheap!), but many resorts offer all-inclusive packages that help keep costs manageable. Timing is key: if you’re on a budget avoid travelling around Christmas and New Year's Eve, when prices can triple, and let’s not talk about the flights which always skyrocket. Outside of the festive period there are plenty of deals to be had.
2. It's Boring—there's Nothing to Do - You Might Be Surprised
Think again! While the Maldives is famous for its laid-back vibes, there’s plenty of action if you want it. From world-class snorkelling and diving with manta rays and turtles to kayaking, sunset cruises, and even underwater dining, the Maldives offers a lot more than just sunbathing. Many resorts also offer excursions to local islands, cooking classes, and water sports like jet-skiing and parasailing.
3. The Only Way to Do the Maldives is with a Seaplane Transfer and a Water Villa - Fun, yes—but not compulsory.
Sure, seaplanes are thrilling, and water villas look like something out of a dream, but they're not the only way to experience the Maldives. Some of the best resorts are a quick speedboat ride away from Malé, and beach villas are a fantastic option too—often more spacious, quieter, and with direct access to the sand. Also, water villas can be noisy with waves underneath, so it's not always the serene escape you imagine.
4. It’s All Curry, Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner - Delicious, But Not Dominant
While Maldivian curry is delicious and worth a try, it’s not the only thing on the menu! Resorts cater to international guests with a wide range of cuisines, from sushi to Italian to BBQ. Many resorts even have multiple restaurants, offering variety from beach grills to fine dining. You won’t be stuck eating curry for breakfast, lunch, and dinner—unless you want to, of course!
5. It’s All Honeymooners - Not Exclusively
Sure, the Maldives is a top honeymoon destination, but it’s not exlcusive for couples. Families, solo travellers, and groups of friends also flock to the Maldives. Many resorts have kids' clubs, family-friendly activities, and group excursions, so everyone can enjoy this paradise, no matter their relationship status. And if you’re looking for romance, don’t worry, you’ll still find plenty of it too!
6. It’s Dangerous—There Are Sharks Everywhere - Baby Ones Yes, But Harmless, Actually
Yes, there are sharks, but these are harmless reef sharks that won’t bother you. In fact, many visitors are thrilled to spot them while snorkelling. They're peaceful and are more interested in fish than humans. So no need to worry: sharks in the Maldives are part of the charm, not a threat.
7. 4 Nights is All You Need - You’ll be crying into your coconut when it’s time to leave
Four nights in paradise is great, but you might find yourself wishing for more. With so much to explore, from island hopping and diving to simply enjoying the stunning beaches, many travellers regret not staying longer. Seven to ten nights gives you plenty of time to unwind and soak in all the Maldives has to offer, without feeling rushed.
8. Alcohol is Prohibited - Your beachside cocktail is safe. Just don’t pack a bottle in your suitcase.
This is a common misconception due to the Maldives being a Muslim-majority country. While alcohol is banned for locals and in public areas, it’s readily available at resorts and liveaboards. So, no need to worry, you’ll be able to sip that sunset cocktail by the beach without any issues.
9. The Maldives and Bora Bora are the Same - Two different oceans, two very different vibes—both gorgeous, but definitely not twins.
Though both destinations offer dreamy overwater bungalows and turquoise lagoons, they are quite different! The Maldives is a collection of over 1,000 coral islands spread across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, while Bora Bora is one island among a group of many, specifically within the Society Islands of French Polynesia.
10. The Maldives Was Destroyed in the 2004 Tsunami - Resilient and radiant—the Maldives has well and truly bounced back.
While the 2004 tsunami was devastating and did affect the Maldives, the country has fully recovered. The islands have rebuilt their infrastructure, and today, the Maldives is as beautiful and resilient as ever.
By clearing up these common misconceptions, it’s easy to see why the Maldives remains one of the most wonderful destinations in the world.
