That said, the tropical paradise has so much more to offer than just a beach. The Maldives has a wealth of activities that cater to every kind of traveller. From underwater adventures to culinary experiences.
The Beaches
No matter which island you find yourself on, the beach is likely to leave you speechless. The beaches are world-famous for their white sands and dazzlingly clear waters, but the magic goes far beyond their beauty. Snorkelling and diving enthusiasts will find themselves in heaven, with some of the best marine life on Earth. The reefs are busy with tropical fish, manta rays, turtles, and even gentle whale sharks.
Whether you’re seeking the lively atmosphere of popular resort beaches or the serene solitude of a private stretch of sand, the Maldives delivers. Our personal favourite kind is the sandbank beaches, where you can feel like you’ve stepped onto a deserted island, surrounded only by uninterrupted ocean views.
Best Time to Visit
The Maldives enjoys a tropical climate, but the best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is warm, dry and sunny. This period is ideal for beach activities, snorkelling, and diving. The monsoon season runs from May to October, bringing higher humidity and occasional rain, particularly from June to August. Though prices may be lower during the wet season, outdoor activities can be disrupted by storms and rough seas. For divers, the transition months of November and April offer some of the best underwater visibility. Our favourite month to visit is March when the weather is at its most comfortable, and you can avoid the peak season crowds.
Where to Stay
When it comes to luxury, the Maldives sets the standard. From stunning overwater bungalows to beachfront villas with private pools, the accommodations here are designed for ultimate relaxation and indulgence. The country’s world-class resorts offer unparalleled service, with private butlers, fine dining, and bespoke experiences ensuring every stay is unforgettable. Many resorts are also dedicated to eco-conscious tourism, blending seamlessly with the natural environment and protecting the fragile marine ecosystem. Whether you’re seeking a romantic hideaway or a family-friendly resort with plenty of activities, the Maldives provides every type of tropical luxury you could dream of, and more.

Insider’s Tip:
After landing in Malé, your journey continues with a scenic transfer to your chosen island resort, typically by seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight, depending on location. If you’re booking flights and accommodation without the help of a a Travel Agent, it’s important to note that seaplanes operate only during daylight hours (after sunrise and before sunset). Arriving in Malé outside this window may require an overnight stay on the mainland before continuing to your resort the following day.
“One of the things I love most about the Maldives is how it has this incredible ability to calm even the most restless of souls.”
A Variety of Experiences
The Maldives offers more than just beach lounging. There’s plenty to do, including sunset cruises, paddleboarding, or even night snorkelling for the more adventurous. For a cultural experience, visit a local island to discover the Maldivian way of life, or indulge in a traditional Bodu Beru drum performance. If you’re a foodie, don’t miss the chance to experience a Maldivian cooking class, where you’ll learn to prepare dishes infused with exotic spices and fresh seafood.
Accessibility
While local islands may not be as easily navigable, most resorts are well-equipped to accommodate guests with limited mobility - some have even introduced adaptations for hearing and visually impaired guests. Many of the larger resorts provide step-free access, adapted bathrooms, and even wheelchair-friendly pathways, beach wheelchairs and even electric ‘golf style’ buggies. For wheelchair users, islands that offer a boat transfers from Male are popular, although at some resorts a seaplane transfer may also be possible.
Shopping
While many high-end resorts in the Maldives feature luxury boutiques stocked with designer labels and branded essentials, shopping across the islands is generally low key, with a strong focus on local craftsmanship. Expect to find handmade souvenirs such as lacquered wooden ornaments, woven baskets and traditional jewellery, each offering a unique memento of your time in paradise. Locally produced coconut oil makes for a thoughtful gift, while the popular Maldivian sarongs, known as feyli, are both practical and stylish additions to any beach wardrobe.
A word of advice: essential items like sunscreen and toiletries are often sold on the islands at a significant premium. To avoid unnecessary expense, it’s wise to pack more than you think you’ll need.
Dining
Maldivian cuisine is a flavourful fusion of South Indian, Sri Lankan, and Arabic influences. Fresh seafood takes centre stage, with tuna, lobster, and crab featured in many dishes. Must-try delicacies include ‘mas huni’ (a breakfast dish of tuna and coconut), and the fiery fish curries spiced with chili and lime. While dining in the Maldives is often a luxurious experience with fine dining options at the resorts, don’t miss out on tasting local street food if you venture out to Malé and its bustling fish markets. The fusion of flavours and spices will leave your taste buds tingling long after you’ve left the islands.

The Maldives is renowned for its safety, both in the resorts and on local islands. Crime rates are low, and the welcoming nature of the Maldivian people creates a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. As always, basic precautions are advised (such as securing valuables in hotel safes) but overall, this is a destination where you can feel at ease whether traveling solo, as a couple, or with family.
